The California Department of Pesticide Regulation just received an application from the biotechnology company Oxitec to release genetically engineered mosquitoes in California.

Oxitec claims they’re trying to combat diseases like Dengue, yellow fever, chikungunya, and Zika, but there’s no evidence that those diseases have ever originated in California.

Even worse: Studies show experiments like this one could result in hybrid mosquitoes that are more aggressive and more resistant to insecticides.

Tell the California Department of Pesticide Regulation to deny Oxitec’s application to treat California as a laboratory for their GMO mosquito science experiment!

For half a century, U.S. staple foods such as corn, wheat, apples and citrus have been sprayed with chlorpyrifos, a dangerous pesticide that can damage the developing brains of children, causing reduced IQ and attention deficit disorders. Now, after more than a decade of advocacy and a series of Earthjustice lawsuits, a federal court ordered the Environmental Protection Agency to stop evading the law and ban all food uses of the neurotoxic pesticide, or prove that it is safe (something the EPA cannot do given the science).  Join us in telling the EPA to finish the job and ban chlorpyrifos now.

The last giants are falling in British Columbia. Old growth forests, home to tall, ancient trees, are still being commercially logged. Now, less than 1% of forests in B.C. are home to stands of large, old trees.

This destruction affects communities across Canada. Healthy, old growth forests clean the air, shield us from fire and flooding, and store massive amounts of carbon. Once logged, it takes hundreds of years to recover the majority of that stored carbon. Protecting old growth forests is one of the most effective things we can do to mitigate the impacts of climate change.

As a final favor to the industrial meat companies, Trump’s USDA proposed approving all new methods of producing genetically engineered animals without reviewing the impacts.

USDA would not even require companies to show the entire genomic sequence of the animal before approving them. The many GE pigs and cows waiting for review would just get automatically approved!

Last year was the second hottest ever recorded and the 2010’s were the hottest decade ever. And from melting Arctic ice to bushfires raging across Australia, we’re already seeing firsthand the devastating impacts of climate change around the world.

The environmental challenges ahead of us are daunting, but there is reason for hope. The solutions to avert climate change catastrophe already exist and are becoming more widespread — now, we just need to turbocharge them. And that’s exactly what NRDC’s 2020 Climate Action Plan is designed to do.

Communities have a right to know about nearby applications of hazardous agricultural pesticides before they happen. We call on you to ensure all requests to use restricted material pesticides are posted publicly on county websites in real time, along with approvals and denials. The public has a right to know!

2,4-D is a toxic herbicide associated with serious health risks. These GMO crops will also, like their predecessors, lead to much greater use of even more dangerous chemicals, the development of more herbicide-resistant weeds, destruction and genetic contamination of neighboring crops, and severe economic impacts on other farmers.
